Stay at the 13th-century monastery-turned-hotel in Italy.
You know it’s summer when slideshows of celebrities holidaying in Europe start popping up on your newsfeed. This year, it’s almost a relief to look at these pictures as proof of (somewhat) normalcy that’s being restored after no-travel 2020. If you, too, have been dreaming of a glamorous, sun-kissed European sojourn with your partner, then you’ll love what’s coming next.

The 13th-century monastery-turned-hotel is perched on a cliff, with gorgeous views of the coast. It was converted into a hotel in 1885 and now you take a lift to the top, 80 meters (262 feet) above sea level, and you’re in another world: one that takes pages from the past and writes new notes on its margins. The interiors carry the legacy of the monastery and the details are hard to miss: understated, contemporary, and lots of neutral tones and whites.
It’s a secluded cocoon for couples. It features just 53 rooms with marble bathrooms. You and your partner can enjoy the infinity pool, its cascading gardens, and the cloister that was once used by monks (now it’s a trail with panoramic coastal vistas). Explore the terraces and the church, and unwind with sundowners at the La Locanda restaurant on the terrace with some more incredible views. The hotel has another restaurant, a bar, a reading room, and a wellness area.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southern Italy, the Amalfi Coast is a sun-kissed paradise. It’s one of the top destinations in Italy—not just for celebrities but also for nature-loving vacationers. Get your hotel to organize a tour of its seaside villages and charming piazzas. The center of Amalfi is just a few minutes from the hotel. You can plan an excursion to Positano with its pastel-colored houses, famous beaches, and lovely boutiques, and see if Sorrento lives up to the expectations of travelers: it’s known for its history, jaw-dropping cliffs, and bucket list-worthy hotels.
A must-do on the Amalfi Coast is the iconic Amalfi Drive that winds through cliffs and gorges, postcard villages and villas, lemon trees, and gleaming waters. It’s 46-miles long (from Salerno to Sorrento), with dramatic scenes along the heart-stopping curves and narrow roads. It’s a serpentine drive, but so worth the effort.
Italy is a siren’s call to travelers who love their vacations served with a side of culture, history, nature, and architecture. In this part of the country, there’s plenty of it. And, when you get to set up your base at a world-class hotel—with big-time savings—the experience is even sweeter.
As a heads up, although Fodor’s fully endorses this deal, we receive a small commission on this transaction.
