As World Bee Day approaches, many luxury hotels around the world have implemented pollination programs, in-house apiaries, honeybee workshops, and more to allow travelers to learn about the importance of bees to the ecosystem while enjoying the honey they produce. Here are some of the top luxury hotels around the world that offer unique and exciting bee-related activities.

Québec Manoir Hovey is a stunning luxury hotel that offers a beekeeping program headed by Jérôme Dubois, which produces two distinct types of honey: spring flower and summer flower. The hives are located on the upper side of the estate and are strategically placed near the forest and wildflowers for the bees to thrive. The honey produced at Manoir Hovey is raw and unadulterated, retaining its natural properties. Jérôme works closely with the chef to incorporate honey into the menus and offers educational activities for guests during the warmer months.

Carmel Valley Ranch, Carmel, CA

Located on 500 acres of wild land in the foothills along California’s Central Coast, Carmel Valley Ranch is a summer-camp-inspired resort that is perfect for families. The resort offers a wide range of family activities that connect with the local landscape, gardens, and animals, including the local honeybees. The property has its own vineyard and wine label, a farm boasting goats, chickens, horses, and an organic garden with an apiary full of honeybees.

The resort offers bee and honey-related workshops and activities that include the A Bee’s Life Workshop, which allows guests to experience the ancient magic of beekeeping through the lens of the Carmel Valley Ranch Bees. Guests can also take part in the Beeswax Candle Making Workshop, where they can create their own candle by selecting from a range of essential oils and combining them with herbs and blossoms from the organic garden.

The bees contribute to the hotel’s seasonal and mountain-inspired menu at Powder, the hotel’s overall food and beverage program, and banquet offerings. In 2015, the hotel built a B-Wall in partnership with Alvéole, a Montreal-based organization that promotes and assists with beehive installation, maintenance and honey extraction. With roughly 50,000 bees, the hive produces approximately 45 pounds of honey each year. The harvested honey is used in the hotel’s culinary creations including custom cocktails. Shangri-La Toronto partnered with Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery to brew their own B-Wall Honey Lager.

The line is paraben-free and dye-free, plus all the products are made with pure water from the Colroy-la-Roche springs, honey from the property’s beehives, berries from the Vosges forest and plants from the surrounding prairies. Guests can also enjoy the honey at breakfast along with delectable breads and other dishes.

As World Bee Day approaches on May 20, the hotel is thrilled to provide a home to two hives in its lush 10-acre garden in La Jolla, which serves as an ideal environment for the bees to explore Southern California’s rich variety of blooms.

In due course, the apiary will produce its own honey, which will be incorporated into the resort’s culinary and spa offerings.
