On February 23, 2023, Canadians will once again have the opportunity to indulge in one of Jamaica’s most cherished snack foods as the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) celebrates Jamaican Patty Day. Now in its 38th year, this annual holiday pays tribute to Jamaica’s iconic patty and commemorates the historical feud between Toronto’s Jamaican patty vendors and local food inspectors.
The “Patty Wars” began in February 1985 when Toronto authorities determined that the term “beef patties” used to describe the popular Jamaican snack was misleading, and the city’s Jamaican patty vendors could no longer use it. This decision led to heated negotiations between the vendors and inspectors, and the vendors eventually prevailed on February 23rd of that year. The day has been known as Jamaican Patty Day ever since.
Today, nearly four decades later, Toronto’s Jamaican community continues to be a vital part of the city’s culinary scene. Residents are still engaged in friendly debates over which patty purveyors serve up the most delicious meat-filled pastry pockets in town. From small patty stands on the subway line, to family-owned bakeries and trendy contemporary Caribbean restaurants, Toronto boasts a wide range of establishments where food enthusiasts can satisfy their cravings for authentic Jamaican patties.

On February 23rd, we encourage everyone in the city, and beyond, to sample a true taste of the Caribbean and pick up some patties in honor of Jamaican Patty Day.”
